This is what lands on the desk of every new starter at Techtonic Mining Solutions.
Good bag. Good bottle. Great coffee cup. A pen fit for MacGyver (though that is lost on our younger engineers). Gear they will actually use on site and off it.
Let’s be honest, though: nobody turns down a better offer because they liked the backpack. But we can control first impressions and an employee’s initial experience, and it says something before we have said a word — we thought about you before you got here.
The part that actually matters comes after. Asking someone where they want to be in three years, and then doing something about it. Listening properly when they tell you something is not working. Making sure your conversations are regular and meaningful. Backing them when it counts.
None of that is complicated. It is just consistent, and consistent is the hard part. We do not always get it right. But people tend to stay where they feel useful, heard and supported.
How does your company keep you engaged — what is something they do that makes you feel like you matter?
