What can I do to help my team succeed?

Historically, leadership in mining has been associated with authoritarianism and strict rules, fortunately, this has evolved over time.

Often seen as a way of ‘getting things done,’ or necessary for career progression. However, we have to ask ourselves why we want to lead?

From experience, servant leadership is the key to engaging high performing teams. Instead of asking “What can my team do for me?”, a servant leader asks, “What can I do to help my team succeed?”

It’s about putting people first, empowering them, listening actively, removing obstacles, and building trust. As a leader, it is your role to act as a conduit for ideas from the team, bring them to fruition, and both recognise and celebrate the achievements.

This also means solidifying the concept of the ‘team.’ Winning as a team, and on occasion, failing as a team.

When leaders lead with empathy and humility, teams don’t just perform bette, they thrive.

What’s your experience and what does good leadership mean to you?
