The Significance of QA/QC in Drill and Blast Optimisation
In mining operations the optimisation of blast designs is an ongoing and essential process. Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) play a critical role in ensuring that drilling and blasting activities are executed in accordance with design specifications.
Key Areas for QA/QC Implementation
▫️ 1. Drilled Hole Quality Control
Accurate drilling is fundamental to effective blasting. However, drill holes can often deviate from the planned design depth due to operator error or the collapse of cuttings into the hole. Without proper QC, the resulting bench profile may be irregular, potentially leaving unblasted toe or causing unintentional preconditioning of the bench below. Holes should be dipped immediately after drilling (to identify redrill requirements and populate charge sheets) and again prior to charging.
▫️ 2. Explosives Density Assurance
When using gassed emulsions, it is essential to routinely verify the density of the explosive to ensure it meets design specifications. After loading, adequate time must be allowed for the gassing process to occur, in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. This QA step ensures the intended Powder Factor (PF) is achieved, optimising the energy output of the blast.
▫️ 3. Stemming Column Quality Control
Post-loading, it is best practice to measure the stemming column. Variations in stemming height can result from cavities, water ingress or insufficient time allowed for charge column to rise. Verifying the stemming height ensures it aligns with the design, providing the correct level of explosive confinement and enhancing overall blast performance.
